The Malta Experience Featured

Written by

HAVING received an exciting invitation to judge in Malta, it was a fortunate opportunity for Ann and myself to have a short winter break.

When you think of Malta, you think of warm weather. During my stay to judge the Malta Canine Society Championship Show held over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, the 9th and 10th of February, the weather was reminiscent of home, being cold, windy and showers with only the odd glimpse of sun.

Nevertheless our stay was extremely enjoyable and we were able to visit many of the fantastic historical attractions the island has to offer including the awe inspiring St John’s Cathedral in Valletta. Learning of the impressive history of this brave island was humbling.

The welcome and hospitality we received was memorable and the show held at the Cottonera Sports Complex was a very well organised event, being a typical “dog show” which would not be out of place anywhere in the world. I was priviledged to judge some quality dogs which would be capable of top honours at any UK Championship Show. My Best in Show went to an outstanding Pug, Anjos Yuri, owned by Mr Paul Pace and was bred in Brazil by Sampaio & Cassati. A 14 month old junior dog whose quality and sound construction was eyecatching and could not be ignored. Not only did he have a typical cobby appearance complimented with a super head, he possesses great character and personality. Good width of body and well ribbed back; he moved with confidence and good parallel extension in front and free easy action behind with a typical slight roll of hindquarters.

Reserve BIS and Utility Group winner was the eyecatching Keeshond, Neradmik Late Night Love, owned by Victor Gatt and bred in the UK by J. Sharpe-Bale. A 16 month old junior bitch who excelled in conformation, condition and coat. Typical short, compact body with good spring and depth, desirable foxy head with ideal shaped and sized ears and correct shaped dark eyes which all together produced an alert, friendly expression. Attractive profile both standing and moving soundly around the good sized ring.

Best Puppy in Show and Reserve Best in Hound Group was the quality 5 month old Beagle, Dialynne Make My Day, owned by Grech & Zahra and bred in the UK by Dianne Spavin. A smart looking, sturdy, compactly constructed youngster who has clean lines all through. Typical in head and expression, pleasing length of neck with good overall body length which, even at this young age is balanced in angulations front and rear, moved confidently with sound gait. He has potential, quality and plenty of promise.

Reserve Best Puppy in Show and Reserve Best in the Utility Group was the impressive 7 month old Akita, Ruthdales All The Rage, owned by Agius Cutajar and bred in the UK by Mathew Bostock. A very smart, upstanding young male who is of good size and is well grown and well boned. He has super conformation and is of impressive dignified appearance. He has quality and promise in appearance and moves soundly and purposefully.

Winner of the Hound Group was the 2 year old aristocratic Basenji, Ch Tokaji Alabama Moon, owned by J. Blundell and UK bred by Hallam & Hardy, who caught the attention as soon as he entered the ring. Soundly made with a super expression and typical head carried proudly on a well arched neck. Very impressive standing and moving like a thoroughbred tirelessly around the ring.

Winner of the Terrier Group was the well balanced Staffordshire Terrier, Silent Brawler Bora, owned by Alex Mallia and Hungarian bred by G. Plezer. A super bitch who has a particularly pleasing head and is soundly constructed and muscular in appearance.

Best Terrier Puppy was the strongly built Bull Terrier, Electra Eos Tanagros, owned by Mario Cessar and bred by Renata Cernys.

Winner of the Working Group was the upstanding Alaskan Malamute, Ivramwoodland Continue The Legend, owned and bred by Ivan Calleja. He is powerfully built and has heavy bone and of impressive size, balance and quality of construction which is ensorsed by his driving movement.

Reserve Best in the Working Group was the quality medium sized Siberian Husky, Ayuka’s Martini Rosso, owned by Chantelle Bezzina and Italian bred by Allev Ayukas. He have quality in breed type and construction with a super profile and head carriage.

Best Working Puppy was the beautiful Shetland Sheepdog, Heavy Sweet Princess Des Mille Eclats Des Tournesols, owned by C. & H. Attard and French bred by N. Triani. Such an exciting youngster who I liked very much. She is well made with good sound movement and has a super head and alert expression.

Reserve Best Working Puppy was the promising Rottweiler, Ires Vom Hause Niveksue, owned and bred by Kevin Tanti.

Winner of the Gundog Group was the free moving Bracco Italiano, Ciclone, owned by J. Galea and bred in Italy by E. Stucchi. Attractive in head and expression and is strong and muscular in appearance, being well made and with driving movement.

Reserve Best Gundog was the well made Pointer, Isoria Ganni, owned by Joseph Schembri and bred by L. Micallef. He is strong in appearance and is well balanced in outline; he moved with good extension in front and driving action behind.

Best Gundog Puppy was another quality Pointer, Jewel Del Galeazzo, owned by J. Galea and bred by Janni Guffanti, a very promising young bitch who has all the makings of a quality adult, moved with enthusiasm and confidence.

Reserve Best in the Toy Group was the very attractive Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel male, Call Me Lucky Scarlett Team, owned by Gordon Spiteri and bred in Slovenia by M. Predna. A very smart, well balanced compact 14 month old who has a particularly attractive head, eyes and expression, moved out well, free moving.

Best Toy Puppy was the 11 month old Yorkshire Terrier bitch, Bluestaryyorky Secret Love, owned by Jean Bagshaw and bred in Italy by Milena Frizzi. One who is nicely compact with a typical head and expression and is nicely grown and in good coat.

Reserve Best Toy Puppy was the 9 month old Pug male, Tangetoppen’s Dreamlover, owned by A. & J. Spiteri and bred by E. Olsen.

Thank you to everyone, both show officials and exhibitors who were so friendly and hospitable and did so much to make our stay so enjoyable and really memorable.
