Adelaide Royal Show

Written by
THIS was Adelaide Royal’s 176th Show, attracting entries from the greater Adelaide area and inter-state. The show was held from Friday, 4th September to Sunday, 13th September and took place in the splendid David Roche Hall, aptly named, as David was a judge, in fact he judged Best in Show at Crufts in 1969.

Best in Show Judge Ann Ingram (Ireland) chose the Kerry Blue Terrier, UK Ch & Ir Ch Torum’s Calico Jack At Irishblu, owned by C & J LeCourt & K & Gray R Brown as the winner of the Adelaide Royal Show.

Reserve BIS was the British Bulldog, Ch Ozmystique No Strings Attached, owned by E. Crisp.

He was a great exhibitor/breeder of many breed with particular interest in Terriers and a great love of Kerry Blues. In fact his affix and house was named ‘Fermoy’. The dog committee in David’s honour presented a new BIS Trophy which was sourced by Sotheby’s London.

David set up a trust and it was from this trust that the committee could purchase the Memorial Trophy. It was purchased at an auction in Paris, made by an English silversmith in the early 18th century. Judges were Ann Ingram (Ireland), Mike MacBeth (Canada) and Anthony Kelly (Ireland).

Between the three Judges, all breeds were judged from the seven Groups and Ann Ingram had the honour of judging BIS on Sunday. Last year the dog committee decided to introduce a new initiative whereby each judge, on completion of judging each breed, gave both a verbal and written critique on Best Dog and Best Bitch.

There was a very large screen in the hall which displayed the judging in each of the three rings. There was a large attendance at the show each day, and in particular for Group Specials and Best in Show. Ann Ingram awarded Best in Show to the Kerry Blue Terrier, UK Ch & Ir Ch Torum’s Calico Jack At Irishblu, owned by C. & J. LeCourt and K. & Gray R. Brown. It was ironic that a Kerry Blue Terrier won the David Roche Memorial Trophy in its inaugural year.

Adelaide Royal Best In Show Judge - Ann Ingram

Many thanks to co judges for sending through such top quality dogs, it was a stunning lineup and the atmosphere was electric! In the end it was the sheer ring presence and wonderful performance which finally made me decide on the Kerry Blue. He is of course, a beautiful example of the breed, with his long powerful head, real terrier expression, well set ears, good front and topline, shown in top class condition, he really powered around the ring, and despite the heat, he never gave up showing for a second, what an amazing sight to see handler and dog in such harmony.

Best in show 2 was the wonderful British Bulldog, so very typical of the breed and a really good size. Super head with good upsweep and broad underjaw, eyes set nicely low down in the skull, wide open nostrils, broad shoulders and body well let down, nice rise over his loins, moved so very well and totally unaffected by the heat, a Bulldog as he should be! Best in Show 3 was the delightful and very charismatic Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, my heart really went out to him and he was undoubtedly the crowd’s choice!

So very typical of the breed with his happy extrovert temperament, correct rough coat, lovely head and intelligent expression, well laid shoulders, strong hindquarters, nice tail carriage, he was definitely a star! Best in Show 4 was the Chinese Crested, such a graceful dog of lovely type with his beautiful head and expression, well set ears, correct body proportions and tailset, strong hindquarters, smooth skin with a nice flowing crest, just a little tired on the move but felt he deserved his place on his overall type!
