An International All Breed Championship Show took place earlier this year in Northern China in the city of Benxi. The judging panel was made up of leading European and American judges and the show is known as The Diamond Dog show...

The brainchild of a local business man who sponsored the event The show was largely held outdoors by the side of a basketball stadium and later in the day the groups took place indoors in the impressive arena. A number of national and breed specialities took place and some of the main winners are pictured here The show was open to the general public which gave the people of the city the opportunity to see pedigree dogs in the show environment.

Benxi Dog Show April 2017

My first time judging in China, which I accepted with some trepidation. My fears were unfounded, as it ended up being one of the most memorable of my judging trips to date. The venue for the show was Shenyang, a province in northern China close to the North Korean border.

The show was held over five days. The first day I judged with my co-judge, Mr Ross Green (Fayken Border Collie fame). Both Ross and myself were to judge at the Pre-Show Specialties for the more popular breeds of Border Collies and Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

This was the first time the Chinese Kennel Union (CKU) had scheduled this type of speciality show, and I believe that Ross and myself were the first ever Breed Specialists from the UK to be invited.

This innovative KC are still in their infancy and are working hard towards the betterment of dogs in all aspects of canine activities and canine welfare in China. They are to be applauded for the hard work so far. With a Border Collie entry into the 30s, it was one of the biggest entries I have had for Borders to date. Overall the quality was mixed with the breed relatively new into China’s show scene, it still has a long way to go.

Most dogs were handled by ‘professional’ handlers. Presentation was ok, overall the breed lacked some typical characteristics and angulation was a serious issue, ear carriage a problem with many and a number with overly large round eyes. My overall BOB was a top size boy of very pleasing type, stronger and less refined in head than I like, but typical, moderate eye colour and pleasing ear carriage, moderate neck, shoulder length ok, short and steep in upper arm, enough bone, good topline, well angulated behind with a correct tail set and carriage. He moved soundly out and back and had a steady typical side gait, although lacking in front extension. Overall a pleasing type.

Competition in the Pembroke Corgis was very strong. Again entries in the 30s, but overall quality was super. Overall construction was excellent in most and with some extremely good and correctly angulated rear quarters. Heads all very typical, eye colour good, ear size and set a bit mixed but my overall winners were very correct. Coats in excellent order. Both my BOB and BOS deserve a mention, both of the highest quality and both of whom I would easily sign a CC for in the UK.

The male on the day taking BOB for his overall star quality and superb construction and he scored heavily on correct angulation and his head and eye, ear set to die for, he was the ultimate showman and was presented and shown to perfection. The bitch gave him a run for his money, again superb type and overall construction, sweetest of heads and again sound on the move, another good head and again sound on the move. Another top class bitch. My thanks to the CKU for the invite and good luck for their future.
