The outdoor show season starts at the beginning of May, but the Tampere International Show on the second weekend of May was still held indoors. The spring has been late this year, the weather has been very cold and we have got snow and hail even in the south of Finland.

So it was good that one of the most important shows was indeed indoors. The venue was a very big hall, usually used for sports, and they don’t let the dog shows use it before the sportsmen start their games and exercises outdoors.

There were nearly 3,900 dogs entered for this two-day event, which was somewhat less than expected, although this is quite a good figure. Obviously now, when the most hectic season has started, the exhibitors can’t take part in all events. There are quite a few smaller local shows for one or two groups, and many find them more cosy and less formal than the big international ones. The panel of judges was very international, there were several new acquaintances for our exhibitors. The BIS judge was the Portuguese allrounder Mr Zeferino Silva, who has visited our country several times and travels also quite a lot around the world judging.

He is well-known for his Pointers himself. The BIS winner came from the very strong Terrier Group, it was the Scottish Terrier Ch Quaint Quincent, owned by Arja Tuuliniemi. He was expertly handled by Hilde Fredriksson, who won the national championship in junior showmanship some years ago amd took part in the international final at Crufts.

Now when she is “too old” for junior handling competitions this skilful young lady has been seen in the rings with some top-winning dogs. She also piloted this dog, among other things, to win the group in the big Stockholm show, the Swedish Winner show last December and also the Finnish Winner show a week before that.

So this was not for the first time they were together on the highest winner’s stand, although the dog hasn’t been shown very much. He is sired by the UK import Int Ch Berrybreeze Daddy Cool, who lives in the same family with this top-winning son of his. Besides this one, Daddy Cool has sired seven other Champions As Res BIS Mr Silva placed the young Toy Poodle Haydee’s D-Jay, owned by Anni Korhonen. Mr Silva had judged the breed himself, so he must have been delighted to see this up-and-coming star to win the group.

He has collected ten CCs already, but according to our rules, must get the qualifying one after his second birthday, which won’t be before November. Another youngster reaching the top spots was the Shar Pei, who went third, Secret Line’s Jack The Ripper, home-bred by Merja Sorsa, same age as the Poodle. He took his eleventh CC, but has also visited other countries and gained several Junior Winner titles. To the fourth place went the Saluki, Int Ch Aziz Karim, owned by Päivi Pilli-Sinkkonen but handled by Janita Jalkanen, the daughter of his breeder Stina Jalkanen. Janita has spent some time in the US to study handling, and obviously not in vain.

This dog is sired by an American dog, who is, in turn sired by a Swedish dog. The dam’s side consists mainly of the Jalkanens’ own breeding, but this outcross litter has been a success, three of five are Int Champions and one “ordinary” Finnish Champion, one unshown. Karim won the group also at the Finnish Winner show in Helsinki last December and was placed third on the next day at Helsinki Winner Show. The other group winners were: the Smooth Collie Ch Clingstone* Make My Day, owned and bred by Satu Asikainen. This bitch is one of an amazing litter which produced several group winners.

She was one of Satu Asikainen’s team of four Smooth Collies, which won best breeders’ group of the day. The Swedish judge Kurt Nilsson was absolutely thrilled about them and couldn’t find enough superlatives to describe these dogs. In the team there were both BOB and BOS and both res. CACIB winners.

The Miniature Wirehaired Dachshund Angelina Pet Vitoraz, owned by Unto Timonen & Sampo Miettinen, is a young Czech import and has done very well so far. She, too, is less than two years old and has to wait for her second birthday to finish her Ch title, and also go to the field trials. The Minis have a test of their own, a little different from what the Standards have to achieve, but really, the little ones are also used for hunting and at least blood tracking in Europe. The Akita Ch Inuline Hard As a Rock, owned by Hanna & Laura Kukkola & Rickard Hagström, belongs to the new generation of top winners, too.

He won the group just some weeks earlier at the Vaasa Int. show. He descends from combined American and British bloodlines. I judged the Scenthound group and found my winner in the GBGV Ch Hocus Pocus van Tum-Tum’s Vriendjes, owned by Hanna Leinonen, but co-owned and bred by that brilliant Dutch breeder Gwen Huikeshoven. This dog has done a lot of winning, but I can’t remember having judged him before. He was alone in the breed but stood out in the group with his self-confident and happy attitude. The Italian Spinone Int Ch Fragola Tempesta Dineve, owned by Juho & Pia Haarala, is already a nine-years-old veteran, but still going strong. She is a consistent winner, has only had one litter in her life. She is a full Champion, which means she has been qualified in the field, too. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Int Ch Banietta’s Flaming Style, owned by Ninni Uusitalo, is also a veteran of same age. He took the World Winner title last year at Moscow among other things.

He was also 2nd Best Veteran of the day, when the US bred Whippet Ch Fanfare’s Too Cool To Care, owned by Jaana Jyläntö, won on Sunday. On Saturday the winner of this important competition was the Tibetan Terrier Int Ch Fabulous Teddy’s Daniel Wanderer, owned by Tarja Salo, who is the current leader of the Veteran of the Year list and strengthened his position by this placing. When the Smooth Collies won the breeders’ groups on Saturday, on Sunday the very even team of Adamant’s English Springers, bred by Tarja Hovila, drew the longest straw. Tarja seems to reach for another win in the Breeder of the Year contest, which she has won a couple of times already.
