FCI Press Release on World Dog Show
The FCI General Committee has been particularly attentive to the reactions expressed over the last days regarding the organisation of the 2017 World Dog Show and General Assembly. We are always eager to protect all FCI members' interests even though this can sometimes generate uncomfortable situations and we are well aware of the unavoidable pros and cons of any decision concerning this matter. The concerns expressed by the Ukrainian Kennel Union regarding the dates suggested to hold the World Dog Show in Leipzig from 6 to 10 July 2017 are very understandable.
We wish to point out that the FCI Statutes (Art 20.q) and the FCI Show Regulations (Art.3) give the power to the FCI General Committee to make decisions regarding issues related to international, world and section shows. Indeed, we would like to draw your attention on the fact that the FCI Dog Shows Regulations clearly allow the General Committee to deal with exceptional cases. Therefore, the FCI Dog Shows Regulations finally confirm the power of the General Committee to take a decision in exceptional cases, such as the case at hand (cancellation of the WDS 2017 in Ecuador).
However, out of concern and respect for the huge work already carried out by the Ukrainian Kennel Union, the FCI General Committee has found a solution: the VDH, in a very kind and appreciated gesture, proposed to change the dates of the 2017 World Dog Show to take place now from 9 to 12 November 2017, preceded by the FCI General Assembly on 6-7 November 2017. We are very happy to announce this solution to a difficult issue and feel confident that you will share our satisfaction. The General Committee of the FCI always works towards finding solutions which will be favourable to the wellbeing of our Federation.
Therefore we are grateful for all the received input from our members concerning this and other issues. Please note that the present message will be translated to the other FCI languages and sent to you in the next days. We once again thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Yours sincerely, Rafael de Santiago FCI President
Our Dogs International Story
The 2017 FCI World Dog Show will be moved from Ecuador, South America and is most likely going to be staged at the Expo Centre in Leipzig in Germany. The kennel club in Ecuador (known as AERCAN) is reported to have told the FCI that it is no longer able to stage the event following the devastating earthquakes in April which killed well over 500 people and causing many more injuries. It is believed that money and resources earmarked for the World Show will now be channelled into helping the homeless and worst hit areas.
The congress centre in Leipzig (pictured below) would also be an ideal venue for the FCI General Assembly which would take place at the same time as the show. Balance A world dog show in Ecuador would certainly have balanced things geographically as the 2018 event is also back in Europe in Amsterdam with 2019 due to be held in the Far East in Shanghai. However, many people were concerned that an event as prestigious as a world show cannot be considered as such in a country so distant from the mainstream of exhibitors.
The show in Ecuador would have been staged on just one day and estimates of an entry of 1500 to 2000 were being discussed. Bringing the event to an established canine country as Germany will see perhaps a three or four day event probably attracting in excess of 20,000 dogs from many parts of the world as travel and location will play a big part. Germany last staged the World Show in 2003 when it took place in the familiar halls of Dortmund showground which were full to capacity at the time. OUR DOGS attended that event 13 years ago where the entry was just under 20,000 and best in show was an Australian Shepherd. Inside sources suggest that the dates of the show will also change as well as the venue due to the proximity of the European Show due to take place in Kiev in August 2017.
OUR DOGS International recently attended the international shows in Kiev in April and the Ukrainian Kennel Union has advanced plans in place to stage the European show from August 24th to the 27th.
Therefore a world show staged so close in Germany on the original dates in July would not be allowed or be desirable for all parties. OUR DOGS International understands that the likely venue would be the Expo Centre in Leipzig where there are over 80,000 square metres of hall space and the date could be later in the year, perhaps November. Such a move of this world event to Germany would suit the growing band of UK exhibitors and trade stand holders who are now venturing more and more into the European scene.
Executive director of the FCI Yves De Clercq has indicated that the FCI's General Committee has canvassed country members to ensure all are in agreement with the move and an official FCI statement is expected on Friday June 17th Ironically the move comes at a time when the whole question of Europe with the EU referendum is at a heightened level.
