NEC to be turned into Nightingale hospital

Featured Written by Our Dogs - 10/04/20

The home of Crufts and LKA championship shows is being turned into a hospital that could house up to 4,000 beds.

As part of the NHS Nightingale project the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham is being transformed into acritical care space that will house 600 beds initially but it has the potential to increase to 4,000 beds if required.

Interserve construction has been appointed to convert the NEC into a hospital and a spokesman said, ‘As the principal contractor, Interserve, with its key supply chain partners and the NEC, will be responsible for creating clinical space for an initial 600 beds with further phases to accommodate up to another 4,000 beds.

‘Interserve is also in discussions around further facilities on site to support the battle against COVID-19.

‘Interserve is working closely with the NHS, the Department of Health and Social Care, and the UK government to deliver a number of critical healthcare schemes across the country.’

In Manchester the Manchester Central complex, formally known as G-MEX which used to host the Manchester Dog Show, is also being turned into an emergency hospital.
Both hospitals will provide critical care for COVID-19 patients in the Midlands and the North West.

Chief executive of the NHS Sir Simon Stephens said, ‘I have given the go-ahead to the building of these NHS Nightingale hospitals at the Birmingham NEC and the Manchester Central Convention centre with further such hospitals to follow.’
A spokesman for the NEC said, ‘We usually look forward to welcoming thousands of you through our doors every week, but right now our top priority is to keep all of our staff, customers and visitors safe at home.
‘We’ve provided the NEC to our brilliant NHS, in order to build and operate NHS Nightingale Birmingham, which will create additional NHS hospital capacity during the COVID-19 outbreak.

‘Meanwhile, we’re working hard behind the scenes to reschedule as many of your favourite events as possible. Hopefully it won’t be long until we’re sharing new experiences and making new memories together.’
