Two International Shows from Kiev

In 2017 the European Dog Show will be held in August in Kiev, Ukraine. This year saw two International Shows take place in late April. Best in Show on Day one at the Golden Gates Show was the Samoyed owned and bred by Pedro Silva from Lisbon in Portugal and best in show day 2 was the Wire Fox terrier judged for BIS by Rony Doedijns from Holland.

Our Dogs had been invited to attend ahead of the EDS 2017 by UKU President Georgiy Onishchenko who together with Vice President Helen Skliarova and their team masterminded a very well run event.

Helen was an efficient bundle of energy from start to finish and as well as taking care of many background arrangements, she also doubled up as co commentator in the main ring.

The judging panel was of a very high order with three of the FCI President's in attendance with Rafael de Santiago, Jørgen Hindse from Denmark and Dinky Santos from Asia Pacific FCI.

Many top names officiated ahead of the European Dog Show in 2017 and we were all staying in an excellent hotel which will be the one used for the 2017 panel and organisation.

The entry over the two days was just under 5000 dogs and the show was held in a modern expo centre that was ideal for a large event. The attractive main ring was well run and featured a massive screen showing videos and live streaming and great music throughout.

Showtime! I wish more shows would add a bit more glitz and glamour to make you remember their events as something special. The hospitality of the UKU was second to none and everything appears to be on track for the EDS in August if 2017, in case you are thinking of attending the event.

Clearly there is a political situation in the Far East of the country but as for Kiev, it was a modern bustling European capital city like many others that host major dog shows. As the world show is being staged in Ecuador next year, perhaps it is time for Kiev to shine even brighter! Judges’ comments within this feature underline how they felt about the excellent organisation for this event.

Let’s hope that European and world dog exhibitors support this event as the infrastructure seems to be well in place to handle an even bigger show OUR DOGS are proud be official media partners of the UKU as they now start to build for August 2017 and we hope to have additional information as time moves on.

Judge Johan Juslin writes....

On Saturday I had a lovely number of WHWTs. I gave the breed to a lovely junior dog, Gino Sunshine Celebration. Of beautiful proportions and well balanced.

Scottish Terriers were again of high quality. BOB was Russian bred, Filisite Brash You Raise Me Up. Correct body volume, excellent length of head, harsh coat. Jack Russell Terriers had an entry of 35, but the overall quality and breed type were very mixed. On Sunday I gave the Group to a lovely Portuguese Water Dog, Claircreek Lusitano Sao Juliao, bred in Portugal. I want to thank the hard working committee and my excellent ring stewards during the show days. The hospitality is fabulous, as always, in Ukraine.

Judge Rosa Agostini writes....

Firstly I would like to thank the Club’s committee members for asking me to judge at this prestigious event with thousands of dogs... a very high quality entry from many countries across Europe.

They made me feel like a family member with their great hospitality and kindness. The showground and the main ring were so impressive and their perfect organisation made the job of all the judges very easy.

Well done Ukrainian Kennel Union! It was indeed an honour and a pleasure for me to judge the Labrador Retrievers with an entry of 106 the largest numerical breed at the show. The quality of the dogs and of the handlers was quite high and many good exhibitors went unplaced.

My only criticism would be that a number exhibits were carrying exccess weight. (The Labrador is a working dog and excess weight will spoil movement and will affect the dog’s health in the long term.It is important to remeber that substance and weight are two different things) Most of the exhibitors are young breeders full of enthusiasm and desire to learn and improve themselves and this is fantastic for their country.

It was a pleasure to see the sporting manner in which my decisions were accepted in the ring! I feel very privileged to have been invited to judge the Junior Handling classes competition as well , I really enjoyed the occasion; what I looked for was their ability to handle their exhibits in kind & gentle manner and felt there a number of many up and coming handlers for the future.

Thanks again to the Committee, to my stewards and of course to the exhibitors for entering their dogs under me. I wish them all my best for the next European Dog show 2017 in Kiev, I am sure it will be a memorable edition!
