IT ALL started in 1964, 49 shows ago, in Menen, a small town in the neighbourhood of Kortrijk. Now it is, without any doubt, the number one show in Flanders and the strongest rival of the national show of Belgium in Brussels. It is the most famous and best known in Belgium, but also in Europe.
It was a great day for the Brits at the 49th Kortrijk Show when the Afghan Hound, Afterglow Jumping Rainbows of Sofico bred by Mike Gadsby and co-owned by Claire Millward together with Dudley and Glenys Chadwick from North Wales took top spot out of 3000 dogs at this popular Belgian event.
This club is one of the younger Belgian clubs that organises dog shows in Belgium. For a few years now, this club has awarded CACIB’s and has grown a lot since. The number of shows in Belgium has decreased, especially in Wallonia where only two shows remain, Liège and Mouscron. Days before the show the media warned that, after a wet and cold July, the weekend of 18-19 August could break the record of highest temperature ever in Belgium, 38,8°C in 1947. Temperatures climbed on Saturday till over 35°C.
TWO years ago, no so long after the show, the main hall burned down. Last year extra space was created on the parking area and did not affect the success of the show. This year the surprise was complete as the show was held under a new roof, just in time to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Syndicat d’Elevage Canin de Liège, the organising club.
Royal Fox Terrier Club of Belgium IT WAS 1887 when the Fox Terrier Club of Belgium was founded, registered as club number 3 in the repertory of the Royal Society Saint Hubert. The club received its predicate “Royal” in 1929.
At the Belgian Retriever Club Ch Show, Pauline Hunt’s NSDTR, Narod Aroona At Wakaduze was awarded Best Veteran in Breed, BOB, then Best Veteran in Show and BIS. Judges were Mrs J. Walters and Mr R. Edwards from the UK and Mrs Yaussi from Switzerland
WITH only two weekends inbetween, another successful show took place in the province of Limburg, in Genk that is not far from Lommel. There was a big increase if entries compared to last year, from 1,487 to no less than 1,636.
