Kotka International All Breeds Show Featured

It's hard to imagine a more picturesque setting than the venue for the 21st “Rose of Kotka” in Finland. The location for the International All Breeds Dog Show on August 15th was Katariina Seaside Park located at the southernmost tip of Kotka, a 20 hectare versatile park and recreational area which enjoys active use throughout the year.

Beautifully landscaped, the park offers areas for all and all kinds of outdoor activities are encouraged. It provided the perfect setting for the show and an abundance of sunshine sparkling on the water made the weekend very special.

The exhibits came from all over Finland and many other countries. Seventeen judges from 11 different countries made up the judging panel and all were shown outstanding hospitality and treated to a spectacular event. Group Judges were: FCI 1 - Nemanja Jovanovic; FCI 2 - Maite Gonzalbo; FCI 3 - Tiina Taulos; FCI 4 - Fabrizio La Rocca; FCI 5 - Nemanja Jovanovic; FCI 6 - Ekaterina Sanashenko; FCI 7 - Ekaterina Sanashenko; FCI 8 - Sinead Taggart; FCI 9 - Laurent Heinesche; FCI 10 - Jussi Liimatainen. Judging Best Veteran was Antonio Di Lorenzo; Best Breeder, Noreen Harris; Junior Handler (Saturday) Trine Gustavsen and (Sunday) Satu Airaksinen. Harry Turtiainen with his Committee and helpers left no stone unturned to provide a memorable event for exhibitors and judges alike.

The attention to detail was excellent. The finals were programmed as great entertainment for the spectators. Pre-judging took place in an outer ring before competing dogs entered the main judging ring. Dogs entered the ring to the sounds of “Finnish Rock” style music. During judging we heard music performed by local artist Junnu Vainio and Finnish Rock continued when the judge's decision was made.

The Finals were live streamed to the Internet. Well done to all concerned and I was pleased to be part of the whole show. Great also that OUR DOGS were supporting the event as the International Media Partner and had also supplied a beautiful best in show rosette for the winner, a lovely Bearded Collie. Noreen Harris Since getting a new showground Kotka Show has rose to the main league among Finnish shows, being probably the best all breed summer show. A beautiful park, where the grass is short enough even for Toydogs, is a pleasure for exhibitors.

The area is surrounded by The Baltic Sea and creates a unique atmosphere and offers a pleasant sea breeze, while enjoying the sun. The entry was pretty international, and I believe this show will attract even more foreign visitors in the future.  I was honoured to judge the Sighthound Group and was pleased to give the red ribbon to a majestic Scottish Deerhound, who entered the ring, neck rising towards the sky, showing excellent power and soft curves.

Well worth Reserve was a classical Afghan Hound female with quality. Must say overall quality positively surprised me in Toy breeds as well. Jussi Liimatainen Kotka is a small town in southeastern corner of Finland by the shores of the Gulf of Finland. The location by the highway E18 that starts from Oslo, Norway, goes through Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland to Saint Petersburg, Russia and makes it very appealing not only to Finnish, but also to all the Scandinavian, Russian and Baltic exhibitors too. The origins of the name of the show, Rose of Kotka, has been taken from the real roses who were the girls who waited in the harbour of Kotka for the arrival of the sailors from all the corners of the world.

This was in the old times, as I learned. The showground, Seapark Katharina, named after the Tsarina of Russia, offers plenty of space in a superb park on beautiful grass by the sea, where everybody is taking superb pictures of the dogs with the see as background. It is really one of the most spectacular venues in the Nordic Countries to use for dog showing and it gives a change to grow in numbers, especially in the coming year 2016, as it is on the calendar just the weekend before WDS Moscow and on your way there with WDS satellite shows and Club Specialties waiting on the following week. The committee, led by Mr Harry Turtiainen, with so much experience and knowledge, makes the show have something special every year.

Always with a new surprise, this year the beautiful program and finals brochure which were fascinating. The reception for the judges with the possibility of an old wood sauna by the beach and sea swimming, and a very friendly atmosphere and superb food, makes, after working a long day judging, wonderful. On Saturday we judged Groups 1, 4, 8, 9 and 10 and on Sunday Groups 2, 3, 5, 6, 7.

Both days had BIS Breeder and Veteran Groups and on Sunday there was an extra BIS Blue & White (Finnish) Breed and of course BIS. Pedro Sanches Delerue
