FOR ME this was a very special appointment, continuing the close ties that we British judges have through our own Kennel Club’s excellent relationship with the Scandinavian Kennel Club.

My Swedish journey started very early on Saturday morning, arriving at Heathrow by 6am ready to board the bus from there to Standstead Airport en route to the small airport at Luvudden.

It was at this airport that the warmth of my Swedish welcome began. A short car journey to the venue, where again I was given such a lovely welcome and where I met up with Dr Monica Stonnenburg who was not only the organiser of the event, but also my hostess for the weekend. Being a two day show the first day was underway when I arrived. I was asked not to attend as many of the exhibitors would be entered and showing under me the following day.

Naturally, I complied with the request. I enjoyed a wonderful tradition dinner later on at the hotel and then to bed. Sunday morning dawned and the weather was perfect. I woke, showered, put on some casual clothes and enjoyed a walk by the lake where I was able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of that time in the morning. It was all so very calming. After a super breakfast, judging started promptly at 9am.

I was fortunate in that the two ring stewards I was appointed are the very tops in this field of ring management.

All the exhibits were presented in tip top condition and the results are as follows:

BIS - Smalltall’s Believe In Me.
BOS - Hotpoint’s Catch Your Eye.
Junior Dog Class - C’Mon Isaac To Delphidons.
Intermediate Dog Class - Dewar.
Open Dog Class - Hotpoint’s Catch Your Eye.
Champion Dog Class - Lloyd Willners Mercury.
Veteran Dog Class - Grande Negros Viggo.
Junior Bitch Class - Diplomatic’s Its Amazing.
Intermediate Bitch Class - Smalltall’s Believe In Me.
Open Bitch Class - Ganteus La Ragazza Sesto Amato.
Champion Bitch Class - Maxidan’s Qualiti Di Prima.
Veteran Bitch Class - Galanthus You’re So Vain. Best Breeder (Sunday) - Kennel Liebe Doggen.

It was especially rewarding to learn after the judging that my Best Female (who went on to become my BIS winner), together with my Best Dog and BOS, were from the kennel of the top Norwegian breeder who sadly passed away last year.

I believe also that the dog and the bitch go back to Bonnie’s famous Hotpoints kennel. I was also told, again after the judging that my BIS had also been BIS the previous day under a Danish judge.

So double congratulations to all connections. After the show, I spent the evening with my host at the beautiful home she shares with her one and only Great Dane and her pack of Pugs!

Dinner was oh so Swedish, poached salmon and all that goes with it. After dinner we shared a nostalgic journey, chatting about our mutual friends, sadly, so many of whom, had passed. After breakfast on my last day of my Swedish weekend, I was treated to a delightful tour of Stockholm.

What a wonderful city! Finally I arrived home leaving the sun and the warmth only to find the British summer and the rain! But this did not dampen my spirits as I had enjoyed a wonderful weekend. Thanks to the Swedish Great Dane Club.
