Geneva winners rise to the challenge

Featured Written by

When one thinks of Switzerland, colourful images of mountain landscapes, indulgent chocolate and luxury timepieces quickly come to mind. Following this year's FCI European Dog Show in Geneva it is certain that this lovely country has also secured a place in the minds of dog lovers everywhere as a home to world-class canines and dedicated purebred enthusiasts.

Some 11,000 dogs assembled during the 30th of August to the 1st of September for three days of competition at the Palexpo centre located near Geneva's airport. The atmosphere inside the spacious hall was energetic and lively as exhibitors young and old from all corners of the globe came together to participate in this special event on the dog show calendar.

Eukanuba Partnership

Playing host to a show of this size is an ambitious undertaking and requires a dedicated network of talented people to ensure things run smoothly and according to plan. Swiss organisers Laurent Pichard, Barbara Muller and their team were not only successful in their efforts, but always seemed to have smiles on their faces throughout the weekend!

The principal sponsor for this great FCI event was once again Eukanuba, whose European, Middle Eastern and African headquarters happen to be based in Geneva. This hometown aspect made the collaboration even more special. The sizeable breed rings were bordered by pink placards emblazoned with the Eukanuba logo, and smaller pink prize boards designated the winners in each class.

The large and inviting Eukanuba trade stand, adjacent to the beautifully appointed special event ring, became a hub of activity throughout the weekend. The Eukanuba breeder's lounge provided the perfect location to watch the group judging unfold while enjoying the company of friends. A photographer was on the stand to offer a special memento for exhibitors to take home from the show.

Home and Away

Dog owners from as far away as America and Thailand were competing in Geneva this year. Even those who could not make the trip to Switzerland were able to follow the action on their home computers and mobile devices thanks to Eukanuba's free live- stream broadcast!

A strong 22,000 viewers from 38 different countries tuned in over the course of three days.  Russia accounted for the largest number of views, followed by Finland and France.

World Challenge Finalist

On Friday afternoon the first of the weekend's two finalists for the Eukanuba World Challenge was chosen.  The three judges selected the three-and-a-half year old Borzoi “Ch Russkiy Azart Romantic” who gained the title of “Swiss Top Dog.” He also earned an expenses paid trip to Orlando, Florida in December for owner Christine Jacquier of Lausanne, who was celebrating her 60th birthday! “It was the most wonderful present he could give to me,” said Christine.

A former dressage rider, she believes that key to “Romantic's” show ring success is the free-running exercise he enjoys in the fields near her home which she feels keeps him both physically and mentally in tune.

Terrier Triumph

After three exciting days in Geneva an ultimate Best in Show winner was selected by Swiss judge and Honorary FCI President Mr Hans Muller. His choice was the animated Scottish Terrier Multi Ch Filiste Brash Koh-I-Noor, bred and owned by Valentina Popova. “Bree” is a two-and-a-half year old female and the latest in a string of top winning Scotties from Valentina's Filiste Brash kennel in Russia. In addition to champion titles in several countries, “Bree” was also Best Puppy in Show at the World Show in Paris and was the Euro Junior Winner in 2011.

Not only did the Scottie's BIS win gain her a place in the history books, it also entitled her to compete in the Eukanuba World Challenge along with the Borzoi “Romantic” and 43 other dog and handler teams in December. Qualifying dogs and owners will be flown to Orlando, Florida courtesy of Eukanuba and compete for a chance to win a $10,000 grand prize! It is the trip of a lifetime!

Commitment to Excellence

The Scottie's win in Geneva highlights a remarkable fourth consecutive year that a dog fed Eukanuba has been awarded Best in Show at the European Show!

In the spirit of healthy dogs, the Dansk Kennel Club used the European Show in Geneva to announce a continued co-operation with Eukanuba. Club President Jorgen Hindse and P&G Petcare Vice President Hounaida Lasry renewed an agreement involving an exclusivity clause and joint logo between the two organisations. Eukanuba is the only pet food brand recommended by the Dansk KC, and along with Danish distributor Eldorado, they will work together to promote the wellbeing of dogs in Denmark.
