Darlington 2012

Featured Written by
THIS WAS my first visit to Darlington Ch Show since the Sam Pascoe days as Secretary, and also my first viewing of the venue at Newby Hall. What a great setting for a dog show, lovely scenic countryside, a well planned layout but most of all I noticed and felt the warm and friendly northern atmosphere.

Talking to other judges during my three days there, this show is fast becoming a real favourite and we were made to feel most welcome from start to finish.

The Committee, led by Chairman Sarah Allsopp; David Guy, the youngest Championship Show Secretary in the country, has a downto- earth approach, plenty of new ideas and has already made an impact and big difference to this society.

I don’t know all the Committee Members, but they all seemed to be working efficiently behind the scenes, and easy to spot in their jade blazers. I felt very honoured to be asked to judge five Groups and BIS and thoroughly enjoyed my time in the north east with good friends old and new.

The final line-up, I thought, looked most impressive, including the two Group winners from the last day, the Pointer bitch, Siddle’s Sh ChWilchrimone IceMaiden JW and Griffon dog, Ch Beauview Royal Male, sent forward by Frank Kane and Stephen Beardwell. IceMaiden looked wonderful in profile movement, full of class and quality and was handled to perfection by Amelia Siddle.

I judged her in the Puppy Stakes at Blackpool last year and was very taken with her then - delighted to see that she got her title and is now also a Group winner. I have long admired the smooth b/t Griffon from the ringside, his attitude is what we would all want in a show dog! Defiant and full of confidents, he looked like a ‘mini Rottweiler’, eyes full of expression, standing his ground and trotting his stuff like any of the big guys.

It had to be a special performance on the final run to decide my winner and runner-up. Ultimately the Bouvier came out tops. Sound and workmanlike, he really looked the business in the hands of handler supremo, Dave Killilea, powering round the ring in perfect harmony.

I have never seen this Bouvier look better than he did today - body, coat and conditioning perfection. Not to be outdone was the gorgeous Norwich Terrier, in high spirits going round the ring in great style. It gave me enormous pleasure to award him RBIS. In my view these two are great ambassadors for their respective breeds. They both had to work hard to edge in front of five other worthy Group winners. Thank you Darlington for a great show.
